There was the camp in North Carolina for water director... I always figured I lost that job telling the owner of the camp, as she drove me,to a mountain lake that housed the sailboats and canoes I did not much care for the job's title: "no one could really direct water".... or maybe it was telling her campers picking their own apple story was not unique, I had done it growing up at Sanford's hockey camp.

I probably was out of her class element... She really never appeared to me to be a camper in her heart. She lavishly lived in a huge home, high on the mountain with vistas of the valley, she drove a mercedes coupe... she wore all white... how many outdoors folks wear all white... desert robes don't count... beekeeper garb excluded too... even her hair was all white. Or grey haha... o well how would my life have changed... working for the snowwhite queen of camps.
I got my first job rejection... in a matter of fact, you don't fit in to our camp image letter. I drove a vega, wore my skirt with boots and chose to eat my own sandwich?

I went on to become a camp unit leader at Camp Arrowhead...
writing in my diary... should pull it out to see what a gal I was. See maybe I should have shown I can do more then sail, I could draw her a carolina wren with a white conte crayon!

Have you ever owned a possession that took you on a journey?
I think, when I was young, everything made me imagine. How we would pass copies around.

Office copy machines united in a small world!

Here is the transcription on the a letter sent to me from an old friend.

Paleoanthropology Division
Smithsonian Institute
207 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20078

Dear Sir:

Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute, labeled "211-D, layer seven, next to the clothesline post. Hominid skull." We have given this specimen a careful and detailed examination, and regret to inform you that we disagree with your theory that it represents "conclusive proof of the presence of Early Man in Charleston County two million years ago." Rather, it appears that what you have found is the head of a Barbie doll, of the variety one of our staff, who has small children, believes to be the "Malibu Barbie". It is evident that you have given a great deal of thought to the analysis of this specimen, and you may be quite certain that those of us who are familiar with your prior work in the field were loathe to come to contradiction with your findings.

However, we do feel that there are a number of physical attributes of the specimen which might have tipped you off to its modern origin:

1. The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically fossilized bone.

2. The cranial capacity of the specimen is approximately 9 cubic centimeters, well below the threshold of even the earliest identified proto-hominids.

3. The dentition pattern evident on the "skull" is more consistent with the common domesticated dog than it is with the "ravenous man-eating Pliocene clams" you speculate roamed the wetlands during that time. This latter finding is certainly one of the most intriguing hypotheses you have submitted in your history with this institution, but the evidence seems to weigh rather heavily against it. Without going into too much detail, let us simply say that:

A. The specimen looks like the head of a Barbie doll that a dog has chewed on.

B. Clams don't have teeth.

It is with feelings tinged with melancholy that we must deny your request to have the specimen carbon-dated. This is partially due to the heavy load our lab must bear in its normal operation, and partly due to carbon dating's notorious inaccuracy in fossils of recent geologic record. To the best of our knowledge, no Barbie dolls were produced prior to 1956 AD, and carbon dating is likely to produce wildly inaccurate results.

Sadly, we must also deny your request that we approach the National Science Foundation's Phylogeny Department with the concept of assigning your specimen the scientific name "Australopithecus spiff-arino." Speaking personally, I, for one, fought tenaciously for the acceptance of your proposed taxonomy, but was ultimately voted down because the species name you selected was hyphenated, and didn't really sound like it might be Latin.

However, we gladly accept your generous donation of this fascinating specimen to the museum. While it is undoubtedly not a hominid fossil, it is, nonetheless, yet another riveting example of the great body of work you seem to accumulate here so effortlessly. You should know that our Director has reserved a special shelf in his own office for the display of the specimens you have previously submitted to the Institution, and the entire staff speculates daily on what you will happen upon next in your digs at the site you have discovered in your back yard.

We eagerly anticipate your trip to our nation's capital that you proposed in your last letter, and several of us are pressing the Director to pay for it. We are particularly interested in hearing you expand on your theories surrounding the "trans-positating fillifitation of ferrous ions in a structural matrix" that makes the excellent juvenile Tyrannosaurus Rex femur you recently discovered take on the deceptive appearance of a rusty 9-mm Sears Craftsman automotive wrench.

Yours in Science,
Harvey Rowe, Curator, Antiquities

:::::::::::::::Barbie and Ken sitting in a tree k i s s i n g::::
Typing antiquities again...
I have my child hood sled, should it find a new home? Caterpillars will beckon the lives of our garden community to keep growing by moving nectar and pollens.

Are there many ways to invoke change.... what makes you move faster?
New boots might slow me down. Sharp saw spikes arm her stem of the fronds. I have had their spines slice my leather gloves!

Saw palmettos grow as dense scrub growth, especially in swales between sand dunes, in the open air of Florida maritime scrub pine weeds, and beneath our live oak hammocks.

Fronds make a fan shape. The fans can span 2 foot in diameter, tho unlike those from a Palmetto, cabbage or sabal palm the saw palm leaves radiate out from the base of the leafstalk.
The root is the reason saw palmettos are shrubby. It spreads laterally under ground, sending fresh green fronds upward every few inches.

I've had his hairy rhizome root ripple our pool's cement pad! So now we have overlad the concrete with pavers. The palms are so hardy they are even fire resistant. They rebound quickly to recolonize, when everything else has been burned out. Untie it and bring it here. 31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 32So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34They said, “The Lord needs it.” 35Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” 40He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.” , Luke 19: 28-40

We entered the nave, this morning singing all-glory-laud-and-honor ," and find a man assembling a cross in the center aisle. I connect with the Word.
I allow The Jeez to speak to my heart. I'm thinking I've come a long way this Lent.

The reading is long and we always stand for the Gospel. I like that we stand. Standing keeps my attention. I don't drift off like when I am seated. My whole focus is brought up through my toes to my soul into the contemplation in the events which unfold before me.Is this the stones calling out the itch to my feet? Not a scratching the surface, digging deeper than the top layer for something to believe in, some word that obviously moves me, stirs my soul to insight over my personal experiences.
An itch to be pierced, a stone to be stirred, and drawn into The Jeez's sacrifice.
It is difficult learning to accept The Jeez's suffering as a pathway.

I asked my Sunday school class of 1st graders "if someone came and said they had to take your father's colt, what would you do?"
Two answered simultaneously "I'd get my father's gun and shoot them!"

Made me think of BobDyaln's 115th Dream song

The man says, "Get out of here
I'll tear you limb from limb"
I said, "You know they refused Jesus, too"
He said, "You're not Him"

so I simply wade in.

How many of us want to be Pilates?
How many of us are interested in doing good work with and for the poor or prisoners or lesser of us?

Do you find, like me, too many others who “lord” it over those underneath them?
How many do we see who seem to see human structures in hierarchical terms in which power is used to control and manipulate to varying degrees?

Do I take the path of least resistance, the easy Palm-strewn one?

Do I follow the still small voice, even when it isn't lucrative, or popular, or well-lit, or comfortable?

Am I exhorted to use power not just to my own advantage and to my family's?

Aren't I exhorted to empower others?

Imagine if all us who call ourselves Jesus followers took this seriously?

Is this the human cost of fear?

The neighboring town is looking to inject reclaimed sewage water into the Florida aquifer. They call it a well storage but really they just don't want to spend the money to do this properly. It isn't a well I would want to have to drink from. They don't believe that the sewage polluatants in this water will end up effecting the Indian River lagoon or the whole east coast of Florida's water supply. Is the palm sunday chicken twirling and rabbit foot rubbing and hammer banging going to work?
This is a moneychanger table that needs to be overturned.

Stay standing and at attention.
What happens this week changes the world, and the most surprising reversal of all is on its way.

honey we are home

and by home I mean the BIG house

'chelle has put organics and beekeepers out there for all to see.

Yes we CAN!

you too can do bees!
check out how good these photos makes ordinary folks feel

On Tuesday, March 24, the first known hive of bees at the White House arrived at their location on the South Lawn. By around 2-3 weeks of age, however — roughly equivalent to middle age in human years — they make a major career change, switching to foraging for nectar and pollen. The brains of nurse bees have higher levels of proteins involved in caste determination in the complex society of these insects. The brains of experienced foragers, on the other hand, have more proteins linked to other vital activities, such as energy production. Their proteomes (the set of proteins expressed by their genes) are quite different, the scientists conclude.

"Our study demonstrated clear brain proteome differences between honey bee nurse and forager subcastes with distinct social roles," the researchers write in the Journal of Proteome Research, a publication of the American Chemical Society

why the white house garden matters by fritz haeg

edible estates
hey bustillo how about your neighbors!

friday

blinded by the light
do you remember that song?
little known trivia Manfred Mann's version of this one was Bruce Springsteen's only top charting #1 song written by the Boss.
<div style='clear:both; I scored a specimen rule book this year.

How do you polish your tomatoes?

herbal dinner rings

delightful freshly plucked rosemary rings the napkin, while mint flower heads and a couple of my mosquito beater lemon geranium scents complemented our dinner of lemon pancetta and rosemary stuffed veal

dirt on finger nails adds true island grit
oops

8 1/2 lb breast of veal
1 tablespoon salt
1 1/4 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
2 cups Italian bread crumbs
10 ounces pancetta or go rural and use bacon, cooked until lightly brown not crisp, finely diced (reserving 2 tablespoons of the rendered fat)
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
4 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon
3 tablespoons garlic
1 1/2 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary, plus another 2 whole sprigs
1 lemon, zested
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
2 medium carrots, coarsely chopped
1 cup white wine
1 cup chicken stock

First butterfly the breast of veal.
Season on both sides with 2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon pepper.
preheat oven to 350F.
Next in a mixing bowl, combine the bread crumbs, pancetta, Parmesan, olive oil, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, garlic, minced rosemary, and lemon zest and stir.
Spread the bread crumb mixture evenly over the pounded portion of the veal leaving the edges clean.
Carefully roll the meat lengthwise and tie every 1 1/2 inches. I use kitchen twine. I save bread crumb mix that falls out of the ends of the roast as I tie.

In a dutch oven over med heat, make the reserved rendered fat very hot, and brown the roast on all sides, turning occasionally, about 12 to 15 minutes.
Remove the veal from the pan and add the onions and carrots and carmelize the onions, stirring about 4 minutes.
Add the white wine, chicken stock, remaining 3 tablespoons of lemon juice, rosemary sprigs, remaining teaspoon of salt and remaining 1/4 teaspoon pepper and return the veal to the pan.
This is when I add any of my dropped and reserved bread crumb mixture.
When the liquid comes to a boil, I cover the dutch oven and put her in the oven. Cook, turning a couple times, for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the veal is very tender.

Remove from the oven and transfer the roast to a platter.
Cover loosely with aluminum foil and let stand for 15 to 30 minutes before removing the kitchen twine and slicing.

Did you read about the find a farmer website? All in the name sustainability. Even space is going green, The shuttle has in tow too a local science teacher turned astronaut (Joseph Acaba ), Koichi Wakata, a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (or JAXA astronaut), who is to become his nation's first long-duration spaceflyer when he joins the station's Expedition 18 crew as a flight engineer for a six-month stay, and a replacement part for a failed processor in the station's urine recycling system. This machine, which was delivered to the ISS in November 2008, was designed to turn the astronaut's pee into drinkable water, though it has been malfunctioning since the start. Mission managers said they hope the spare part being carried up by Discovery will do the trick to fix the system, which is also essential for hosting double-sized crews on the space station.
Speaking of outhouses in space. />
2 packages=2 Tablespoons active dry yeast
pinch of sugar
1 1/4cup warm water
3 1/2cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 c. olive oil

1 lb mozzarella grated/shredded
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
my choice topping are sundried tomatoes add yours
Preheat oven to 450-500 degrees.

Sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of yeast and a pinch of sugar into a 1/4 cup of warm water (110-115 degrees). Let this cup stand for 5 to 8 minutes in a warm place, as sugar and yeast dissolve. The yeast will bubble up and you want the mixture to froth almost double in volume. If the yeast does not bubble, start over with fresh yeast.

While the yeast bubbles, in a large mixing bowl, measure the flour and salt.

Make a well in the center of the flour and pour inot it the yeast mixture and adding 1 cup of warm water and 1/4 cup of olive oil.

Mix the dough.

When you can gather the dough in a rough ball, place onto a floured board and knead for 5 minutes, or until smooth, shiny and elastic.

Dust the dough lightly with flour, place it in the mixing bowl that has been cleaned out and cover.

Set in a warm draft free spot for about 20-30 minutes. This is when I grate cheese or chop toppings.

Punch down dough and you have the choice to make one big thick pizza

When I make a large pizza I drizzle olive oil ~1 to 2tablespoons on a pizza pan and then pulling and stretching I flatten out the pizza dough to the shape of the pan with my fingers...

Flute edges, spoon on a cup of sauce or more, and add my cheese then the toppings.

another option: you can choose to put the dough on a floured board sprinkle the ball with flour and use a rolling pin. I usually only do this when I make little pizzas. I divide the large ball into quarters and using the floured rolling pin I roll until the dough is 7" in diameter. Next rolling in a circle with the floured rolling pin, the diameter expands to 10" and is about 1/8" thick. To make 4 10" pizzas.

Dust a large baking sheet with cornmeal and place the little pizzas on it.
Flute edges.

If you prefer an extra crispy crust, put the dough in the oven for ~12 minutes before you spoon on the sauce.

After edges are fluted, spoon on a 1/2 cup of sauce, add cheese then the toppings.

*Dough recipe also makes excellent bread sticks.
*Shape dough and bake about 10 minutes, serving with melted garlic butter or more sauce.

Pizza sauce
yields 3 cups
2 clove garlic minced
1 onion minced
1 Tablespoon olive oil
2 14 1/2 oz cans of tomatoes, diced
1 6oz can of tomato paste
1 Tablespoon oregano leaves
1 Tablespoon basil leaves
1 teaspoon thyme leaves
1 teaspoon salt

Heating oil in a heavy 10" skillet over low heat, I add garlic and onion. Stirring frequently I cook until onion is tender. Add remaining ingredients, stirring well. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 1 hour, stirring and don't go outside the box :)

5) What do you like to put on your toast?
honey

6) How many televisions are in your type='text'>Tis The Season

Today is red hot!

I planted red salvia for Christmas color to spike up my petunias years ago. Red hot sally lives on and on and on and on!
Never even seen a caterpillar, slug or thrip on her. What about you? Any pests in your zone?
The only thing I don't like about her longevity is I seem to be stuck in a color rut for the holidays with her volunteer reseeding.
Do you have a color trend in your garden?
I know some love only white which bores many who love the riot of orange purple and reds. Are you a monochromatic planter? Do you change your colors annually? seasonally? ok and I'm not taking: yes we do winter white! Color is difficult, for me, to maintain in the garden all year round solely with the planting too. I use licks of paint on benches, fence and some pots.

Paint is a way to instantly freshen up our garden as a whole and set the planting off really well too. I'm thinking about introducing a new color.

Do I go
Red
arousing, exciting, stimulating.
Do you think of red as masculine? Red is a warm color actually some call her hot. Red makes the plants appear closer so it can be used in the far off beds.

Do I choose
Pink
soft, acquiescent, sensuous. Pinks seem more feminine then red.

Orange
exciting, stimulating, intense.
Do you see orange as lively? Does it make you feel whimsical compared to red?

What about peachy soft, sunny, warm. Seems feminine too.

Thetrend color is
Yellow
feeling luminous, sunny, cheerful.
Softer yellow, to me, are expansive and open bringing spacious sense alive. It tends to lose it color and needs a cool color to play off.
Pure yellow, to me, are acidic and irritating in large amounts. Tho I like how they add energy and whimsy.

What color will set off our plants?

hmmmm
The cool colors such as blues, purples, lavenders and whites always work well together and blend well with planting of similar hues, whereas the hotter colors of the reds, oranges and yellows tend to warm things up a little and intensify the greens of nearby plants.

I'll limit the color to one or two which compliment each other to keep the garden looking harmonious.
I'm thinking, I'll use light colors to help bounce the light around in the shady parts.

hmmmm
maybe purple and orange to exemplify the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties I like to draw on for feelings of reassurance.

so much to consider while
I'm doggie sitting my younger boys pupdog while he is in our old stomping grounds of kentucky. He is on his first med school interview. style="font-family:verdana;">
the good old days when milk was delivered to our back door and the time the paper cap rose up out of
